Summer Student Research Program

Summer 2009 - Meet the Students

The Summer Student Research Program 2009 has brought 15 students from around California and other states to HMRI laboratories. The students are contributing 10 weeks of their time and efforts to various projects in biomedical research, working under the supervision and mentorship of Mike Harrington, Alfred Fonteh, Myron Tong, Marylou Ingram, Brian Ross, Martin Han, and Victor Pikov. At the end of the summer program, they are expected to present results of their research projects.

Elizabeth Backus, a senior at Brigham Young University, is from South Pasadena. This summer she will be working in Neurology with Dr. Alfred Fonteh. Elizabeth plans to pursue a career as a medical doctor.

Katherine Donahoe is from Honolulu, Hawaii. She is planning to graduate from California State University, Los Angeles in 2010. This summer she will be working in Neural Engineering with Dr. Victor Pikov. After CSULA, Katherine plans to attend graduate school and continue doing research.

Samuel Gong is from Hermosa Beach and is in his third year at USC. This summer he will be working in Neural Engineering with Dr. Martin Han on â"measurement of dissolution rate of a biodegradable neural probe." Eventually, Samuel would like to work in pharmaceuticals.

Mounir Guerras comes to HMRI from Nancy, France. He is a first year Master's student at the University of Nancy. This summer he is studying the corrosion on neuroprosthetics in the Neural Engineering department with Dr. Pikov. Mounir intends to pursue a career in Biomedical Engineering.

Sarah Imam, a Los Angeles native, is a recent graduate of USC. This summer, she will be studying migraine with Dr. Mike Harrington. Sarah plans to continue her education in medical school.

Devery Mitchell is from Napa and is a student at University of Redlands. This summer she will be studying migraine with Dr. Harrington in Molecular Neurology. Devery plans to attend medical school.

Kaddour Rani comes to HMRI from Nancy, France. He is a first year Master's student at the University of Nancy. He is studying corrosion on neuroprosthetics in the Neural Engineering department with Dr. Pikov.

Syena Sarrafpour is from San Gabriel and is currently a sophomore at Tufts University. This summer she will be studying migraine in the Molecular Neurology department with Dr. Fonteh. Syena plans to pursue a career as a medical doctor.

Gaelen Stanford-Moore is from South Pasadena and is planning to graduate from UC Berkeley in 2012. This summer she will be studying detection and diagnosis of heptocellular carcinoma with Dr. Myron Tong. After Berkeley, Gaelen plans to attend medical school.

Kelley Trapp is from Monterey, California and is planning to graduate from Amherst College in 2011. This summer she will be working with Dr. Harrington, isolating fibronectin in the CSF of hydrocephalus patients. After Amherst, Kelley plans to attend medical school.

Dung Vu is from Pearland, Texas and is currently a senior at Houston Baptist University. This summer she will be studying migraine in the Molecular Neurology department with Dr. Harrington. Dung plans to pursue either a Ph.D. or M.D.

Matt Weissman is from La Canada and plans to graduate from UCSD in 2010. This summer he will be working with Dr. Tong in liver research. Matt plans to continue his medical studies in graduate school.

nCandiceYoung1

Candice Young is from La Canada and is a junior at UC Davis. This summer she will be working in tissue engineering with Dr. Ingram. After UC Davis, Candice plans to attend medical school.

Edmond Yu, a Los Angeles native, has completed three years at UCLA. He is working with Dr. Martin Han on finite element modelling of probe insertion

Samuel Wein, is a student at Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana. He is working with Dr. Alfred Fonteh on software tools for detecting CSF markers.
