NIH Award - HMRI Refines Deep Brain Stimulation to Treat Parkinson's Disease The Neural Engineering Laboratory, under the direction of Douglas B. McCreery, Ph.D., recently received a three-year grant for $1.1 million to develop microelectrode arrays for implantation in the brain to treat Parkinson's disease. This grant was awarded by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, a division of the National Institutes of Health. MRS Probe Course Covers the Whole Spectrum An intensive four-day training course in Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS) was held recently at HMRI and Huntington Hospital, offering "hands on" scanner training and small group interpretation sessions for 30 clinical professionals from around the world. The course opening and banquet were held at the nearby Huntington Library. Medical Research Council Gets Clear View of Breast Cancer Early detection of breast cancer is known to be a critical factor in its successful treatment. New developments in early breast cancer detection and evaluation of breast cancer, as well as individualized treatment of patients, were the topics of discussion at the March 29 meeting of HMRI's Medical Research Council, held at the corporate offices of Roger Engemann and Associates. Altadena Guild Celebrates Golden Anniversary "On Top of the World" At the annual June luncheon of the Altadena Guild of Huntington Hospital, held at the home of HMRI Board and Altadena Guild member Doris Pankow, guests from HMRI applauded a donation of $29,000 from the 50th annual home tour, "On Top of the World for 50 Years." American College of Cardiology Honors HMRI's Dr. Bing Richard J. Bing, M.D., head of HMRI's Experimental Cardiology Laboratory since 1969, received the 2001 Presidential Citation of the American College of Cardiology at its Fiftieth Annual Scientific Session in Orlando, Florida, on March 20. Pasadena City College Honors HMRI Partners in Education Marylou Ingram, M.D., director of HMRI's Cell Culture Laboratory, and research associate Ozkan Yazan, M.S., were honored for their contributions to Pasadena City College (PCC) students in the Biological Technology Program. Alzheimer's Association Holds International Workshop at HMRI An international research workshop convened by the Alzheimer's Association was held June 17-19 at HMRI and Huntington Hospital, at the invitation of HMRI Executive Director William Opel, Ph.D. Let's Talk About Cardiac Arrest: Do You Have Five Minutes? Each year in the United States, an estimated 350,000 victims die from sudden cardiac arrest - nearly 1,000 people each day. Sudden cardiac arrest can strike anyone - man or woman, young or old - anywhere, any time and often without warning. However, if you recognize cardiac arrest and have immediate access to an automated external defibrillator (AED), you can improve a victim's chances for survival by 40 percent. This message was delivered vividly and urgently to the June 21, 2001 meeting of HMRI's Medical Research Council. International MRS Society Recognizes Young HMRI Researchers The HMRI Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy group was well represented at the 2001 conference of the International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM). In April, four young researchers received funding from the organization's Educational Stipend Program which allowed them to travel to Glasgow, Scotland, to present research posters and papers. In Memoriam: Lawrence J. Handy Lawrence J. Handy, HMRI's courier since 1990, passed away on March 22, 2001. He was employee, friend and good will ambassador, performing all his responsibilities with great caring and good humor. In Memoriam: Catherine L. Andrews Cathy Andrews, a member of the Altadena Guild since 1988, passed away on May 25, 2001. She frequently visited the HMRI offices, sharing her cheerful disposition and creativity with us while carrying out her many Guild responsibilities.
