HMRI's 50th Anniversary Celebration Highlights Distinguished Past, Bright Future

On August 28, 2002, nearly 300 supporters, friends and employees of the Huntington Medical Research Institutes, including many of its physicians and scientists, gathered at the DoubleTree Hotel in Pasadena to celebrate five decades of pioneering research that, in the words of William Opel, Ph.D, Executive Director, have "enhanced the health of the people of Pasadena and the world far beyond it."

Altadena Guild Begins Second Half-Century of Service to HMRI

Huntington Medical Research Institutes is proud and deeply appreciative of its longstanding relationship with this dedicated and talented group. Formed in 1951 as the Altadena Guild of the Huntington Memorial Hospital, the organization consisted of Altadena women who wanted to help extend and enlarge the work of the Women's Auxiliary of the hospital.

Rewiring Our Automatic Brain

Electrical malfunctions in the brain and nervous system are at the root of conditions like epilepsy and Parkinson's Disease, and "electrical problems" grow more common with age.  Neural research to find their solutions is a critical part of our mission at HMRI. At a presentation to the Medical Research Council (MRC) entitled "Rewiring Our Automatic Brain," HMRI supporters and friends heard about current work in this area. The program featured Michael G. Harrington, M.B., Ch.B., FRCP, who heads the Molecular Neurology Laboratory, and Douglas McCreery, Ph.D., director of the Neural Engineering Laboratories.

Hepatitis C: The Silent Epidemic

The Medical Research Council met on July 11, 2002 at the Pasadena home of HMRI Board of Directors President Roger Engemann and his wife Michele to hear a talk by Myron J. Tong, M.D., Ph.D., Director of the Liver Research Program at HMRI. Dr. Tong spoke from the landscaped garden patio of the Engemann home about "Hepatitis C: The Silent Epidemic."

HMRI Researcher Wins Young Investigator Award

Alexander P. Lin, a research associate at Huntington Medical Research Institutes, received the prestigious Young Investigator Award from the European Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and Biology for his study on Alzheimer's Disease patients.

Heart Imaging May Improve Outcomes for Cardiac Patients

At their annual meeting with HMRI on November 1, 2002 members of the Altadena Guild and their guests heard a program on Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) as a promising diagnostic tool for the heart.

Academy Bestows Honors on Dr. Richard Bing

Richard J. Bing, M.D., who directed cardiology research at HMRI from 1969 until his retirement in 2001, has been named a Fellow of the International Academy of Cardiovascular Sciences.
