HMRI Celebrates the Life and Legacy of Dr. C. Hunter Shelden C. Hunter Shelden, M.D., a leading neurosurgeon and a founding director of the Huntington Medical Research Institutes, died in Pasadena on January 12, 2003, after a brief illness. A memorial program was held January 24 at Huntington Hospital's Braun Auditorium, with remarks and memories shared by family members, HMRI directors and scientific leaders, former colleagues and friends. Electron Microscopes Shed New Light on Neural Prostheses Through their work examining fragments of nerve tissue taken near an implanted electrode, Al Lossinsky, Ph.D. and Steve Manooonkitiwongsa, Ph.D. are looking at the future of neural engineering at HMRI. NIH Award Advances HMRI Migraine Studies The National Institutes of Health has awarded a four-year $1.4 million grant for migraine headache research to HMRI's Molecular Neurology Program, headed by Michael Harrington, M.B., ChB., FRCP. Altadena Guild Presents Meadowbrook in May The 52nd annual Altadena Guild Home Tour, the oldest continuous home tour in southern California, took place Sunday, May 4, 2003, to benefit HMRI. Co-chairs were Carla Houser Partma, Mary Smeritschnig, Anne MacPherson, Laurie Kinsinger and Pat Trivers. Council Hears Program on Investing in Hard Times The Medical Research Council presented a reception and economic forum on tax strategy, "Investing in Hard Times," at the offices of HMRI Board of Directors President Roger Engemann on the evening of November 13, 2002. In Memoriam: Ted G. H. Yuen 1933-2002 Ted G.H. Yuen, Ph.D., a valued member of HMRI's Neural Engineering Department from 1971 until his retirement in 2001, passed away on December 14, 2002. Summertime, and the Science is Youthful For the 47th year, HMRI researchers provided laboratory space, equipment and instruction to college science students from the Pasadena area during the summer. Eight outstanding students were selected in 2002. HMRI Honors Dedicated Employees Each year Huntington Medical Research Institutes expresses its pride and appreciation for the dedication and skill of the physicians, scientists, laboratory and administrative staff who contribute to our progress in advancing medical knowledge and technology. At the holiday banquet, held December 18, 2002, at the Altadena Town and Country Club, nine of HMRI's finest were honored for a total of 115 years of service.
