Tenth Annual Lynn Smith Memorial Tourney is a Winner

On a beautiful day in late October, friends, supporters and staff of the Huntington Medical Research Institutes and Huntington Hospital joined members of the Altadena Guild for the 10th Annual Lynn Smith Memorial Golf Tournament at Brookside Golf Club.  Honorary chairpersons were Roger and Michele Engemann.  Proceeds benefit HMRI research and mentorship programs.

As golfers checked in at registration, the comment most often heard was "I wouldn't miss this!" Altadena Guild volunteers and other committee members, who had been meeting and preparing since January for the event, all felt the same way.  During the reception which followed the tournament,  a slide show featured the players on the golf course during the day.  Winners received beautiful prizes of Waterford and optic crystal.  First place winners were:

Men: Drs. Andrew Lee, James Lin, Michael Luu, Zaw Min

Ladies: Karen Capehart, Deedie McCarthy, Pat Moreland, Lynn Myers

Mixed: Jacque Bertero, Phil Cutting, Jean Gunnell, Tom Hirsch

Seniors: John Cashion, Jerry Harrington, Ted Robinson, Bert Tibbs

The Closest-to-the-Pin competition was won by Ada Dixon and John Johnson (#8), Jacque Bertero and Andrew Lee (#17).  Longest Drive awards went to Jean Gunnell and Rich Wolfe.

A silent auction and drawing offered a choice selection of items donated by many generous businesses and individuals in the Pasadena area.

A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Shelden Award to Jacque Bertero.  This award is named for Pasadena neurosurgeon and HMRI researcher C. Hunter Shelden, M.D., who was a close friend of Lynn Smith, an avid golfer and once designed and built a putter which he hoped would be approved by the PGA.  It acknowledges Jacque's loyalty, professionalism and commitment to the tournament and to HMRI.  A Pasadena resident, she has served on the committee and played in the event since 1994, was a co-chair in 1995 and has been tournament director for the past seven years. "I am very honored to have this award and tribute to Dr. Shelden," Jacque said.  "He was an exceptional person and an enthusiastic friend of the game of golf."

We all celebrated our continuing commitment to HMRI and to the golf tournament. As we said good night and noted the date for the next  tournament - October 20, 2003 -  there was a chorus of "We'll be there!"

A check for $39,000 was given to HMRI at the December  Altadena Guild meeting.  It was a special moment for all those who had planned and worked to realize this significant gift.  Executive Director Dr. William Opel announced that the donation would be used, in part, to purchase two LCD projectors for Power Point presentations.

Altadena Guild members have been supporting HMRI since 1952. This year our ranks were swelled by 15 new provisional members, many of whom helped with the golf tournament. Thanks to everyone for the enthusiasm and hard work!
