Donations

Private donors provide critical support for virtually all programs at HMRI, including those in cancer, liver disease and neurological and heart research.  Ongoing advances are possible because of funds available from "annual giving" of contributions, including memorials, from time to time as well as "planned giving" through bequests and trusts.

Charitable contributions to HMRI are fully deductible from taxable income by most donors who itemize their deductions.  Contributors receive a receipt from HMRI for each donation made.  For payment made to support special events, the value of any meals or other offsetting benefits received by the donor are not deductible.  Of course, most donors support HMRI primarily because they want to advance the research being conducted, whether or not they receive tax deductions.  HMRI works to use all donations effectively and efficiently.  HMRI maintains a financial control system designed to assure the proper use of all funds received and contracts for an annual outside audit to verify proper reporting of financial matters.

To support HMRI you should send your contribution by check to:

Huntington Medical Research Institutes
734 Fairmount Avenue
Pasadena, CA  91105

You may designate special uses for your contribution, including research program areas in cancer, heart and neurological disease.  You may also designate your charitable gift for purchase of  scientific instrumentation or other capital purposes.

Memorial and Honor Donations

Many individuals, families and organizations support HMRI by making donations to honor loved ones who have died or whom they want to honor in life.  When designated, family members of those who have died or individuals who are being honored receive a tasteful notification card from HMRI noting the name of the donor(s), but not the amount contributed.  Names of all donors and names of all individuals in whose memory gifts are made are published in the HMRI newsletter.  All donors and individuals notified of donations receive copies of the newsletter.

Gifts of Stock

Donors often find it advantageous to contribute stock in publicly traded companies to HMRI.  They can then usually deduct the full market value of such stocks from their taxes.  Usually, such stocks can be transferred electronically to HMRI's custodial securities account.  HMRI sometimes also receives gifts of holdings in privately held companies.  To obtain further information on making stock gifts, please call the HMRI Development Office at (626) 397-5804.

Bequests and other Planned Giving

Many of HMRI's largest gifts come as bequests.  If you wish to include HMRI in your will, your attorney should include "Huntington Medical Research Institutes" as a beneficiary according to your wishes.  You may also wish to consider making HMRI the beneficiary of a charitable trust.  Among the kinds of trusts available are charitable remainder trusts where you irrevocably designate funds to eventually go to HMRI, but where you receive an income stream for the duration of the lives of one or more people, as well as a current tax deduction.  Another form of trust is the charitable lead trust in which case funds you designate generate income for HMRI for a period of time, with the principal ultimately going on to the benefactors heirs.

Insurance

Some donors contribute to HMRI through life insurance policies.  Your attorney, tax accountant and insurance agent can all provide you with further details on how to make such a donation.

Gifts of Property

You may want to consider making a gift of real estate or personal property to HMRI to support the research program.  Real property includes houses, condominiums, apartments, as well as commercial or industrial buildings and land which is vacant or used for agriculture.  Personal property includes artwork, jewelry, vehicles, boats, aircraft, furnishings and other such items.  The fair market value of donated property is tax-deductible.  Please call HMRI at (626) 397-5804 if you wish to make such a contribution to HMRI.
